Dreamtime
Before I publish a mass of information about some strange bacterium, I’d like to work some more on this issue of time. After my last entry on the subject (Time and the Cosmic Mobius Strip), I received another e-mail from J. This time he wrote:
I have a feeling you may be onto something when you mentioned a particular point. You wrote that maybe we(human beings) cannot experience or understand singularity of time very often, if at all, because it does not fall within our own created constructs and constraints of the concept of time. Maybe like dreamtime? We usually cannot make out much of them because they occur beyond the boundaries of “time”, ey? –J
Hmm.. there are two ways to answer this, merely by the wording of the question. First, I suspect he is talking about the sense of time during dreams–the sort that occur during REM sleep. No one really knows, scientifically, what is going on in a dream; we can’t even figure out why we dream, let alone understand the results. This could be related to the fact that dreams seem to avoid having a solid aspect of time to them. In a dream, you can float into the past and future without hesitation. I’ll admit, I’ve even had the experience of dreaming about a place before ever seeing it in person.
(I’d dreamed many times of a large house on a hill since my childhood. When my husband brought me to his hometown in Southern California for the first time, one of his old friends lived in the exact same house. She and her parents were understanding and managed to offer some comfort–Walking into a place that you’ve dreamed before can be quite unsettling.)Â
They say we always dream about things we have seen… but what if there are only so many combinations of things we can see? We could easily hit on a combination of elements in a dream that we’ve never encountered in “real” life, but exists with certainty elsewhere, or will exist in the future. If we were able to explain an element of a dream or reality without using time-dependant concepts, we might find they are quite similar.
The other thing that caught my eye in J’s question was the way he phrased “dreamtime.” While I’m sure he was speaking of dreaming in the sense described above (I asked) the phrase fits the topic in another sense. Dreamtime is a state of being, central to the mythologies and beliefs of native Australians.
According to the ancient stories (and by ancient, we’re talking 50,000 years or more)Dreamtime encompasses everything. It is time, in a sense, that has been freed from the restrictions of defining time: Dreamtime is known as the “all-at-once.” Life, death, beginnings, endings, the knowledge of ancestors, and spiritual power are all considered to be mere aspects of dreamtime.
It is said that each being (I want to say “being-in-itself”, thank you Sartre) has an essence of dreamtime called its “dreaming.” Australian aboriginal myths tend to surround the idea of dreaming, describing how an aspect of reality (be it a local thing, like a big rock, or a concept like sharing) came to be by its dreaming.Â
These myths say that in order to fully reach dreamtime–the past, present and future coexisting–we must first overcome the “one-thing-after-another” time. If you’re a native Australian, this can be achieved by following the rules, performing rituals, and learning and teaching the myths of your trib nolvadex, buy nolvadex, nolvadex kontakt, research chemicals nolvadex,Buy Nolvadex at low price Need generic NolvadexIn my experience, NolvadexD-Bol, Deca, Test, Winni-V & HGH, more Nolvadex Prescription New Formula increases Testoterone levels up to 400% in 2Save on Popular Novedex XT $29 com and save e.
I’m not too sure if we have a shot at the classic ”all-at-once” when our tribal customs include cell phones and e-mail. “All-at-once” in this case, seems a bit more like chaos. Then again…hasn’t it always been so? ;)
